Is it too cynical of me to think that maybe this movie wasn't testing well and the studio was looking for a reason to reshoot or re-edit the movie anyway? Then the tragedy in Colorado occured and gave them the opertunity they were looking for. Not only do they save face by restructuring a film that wasn't working, they also look like the sympathic hero. I thought the trailer seemed uneven at best.

Thank goodness for Blu-Ray.. presumably we'll still be able to see the original cut at home at least.

This is not a new occurrence though – check the name change for the coming movie The Watch due to the Trayvon Martin shooting.

This entire Gangster Squad debacle is becoming an endless cluster fuck. Cutting and re-shooting the film is UTTERLY asinine. It's censorship, plain and simple, and there's something about it that feels distinctly un-American. It's a dangerous precedent to be setting. I understand scapping the trailer and cutting a new one (easy as pie), but to ask a filmmaker to re-shoot and re-edit their film because of a recent tragedy is beyond insulting to everyone who made the movie in the first place, and insulting to the millions of people who would have otherwise seen the film and never once thought about killing anyone. If there is a plane crash a week before Flight opens, is Paramount going to re-shoot the movie and delay it? If there's a bank robbery in the south and some people are killed, is Lawless gonna get tinkered with and delayed by The Weinsteins? There is a TON of reactionary nonsense being thrown around Hwood and in the media over the last week, and this snap-judgement decision by WB represents nothing but an egregious failure to see the real problem at hand. Movies don't create killers. To say nothing of the fact that Gangster Squad is a period film and the context with what happened in Colorado is completely different than what is being depicted in a big-budget, LA Confidential-esque action drama. This is horse-shit on every level. ITts actually really shocking that WB is going this far with the re-shooting/re-cutting. I half expected their statement to get retracted. Question — if this was Martin Scorsese's Gangster Squad, or Michael Mann's Gangster Squad, think the suits would even CONSIDER this stupidity?
