Fox Searchlight can not release “Shame” without a MPAA rating, because their parent (20th Century Fox ) is a MPAA member.

Steve McQueen refuse to re-edit \”Shame\” for getting R rating. Fox Searchlight clearly know it and accept it when they acquire the film.

BTW, Fox Searchlight were happy with the US box office performance of \”The Dreamers\”.

Fox Searchlight had to agree not to cut the film inorder to buy it. The director would not change his mind so it will either be unrated or NC-17. The world is not full of children, there should be entertainment for mature adults too who won\’t go running at the sight of a penis.

What about Coriolanus? Or Cannes hit The Artist?

The latter particularly I think will charm the hearts of the Academy and score big time.
