It's interesting that Tarzan is being spun as a 'success', because it came in higher than its incredibly low expectations, but ID2 is seen as a failure, even though it achieved a higher opening, on a lower budget, and will likely make more domestically and internationally. It's all just spin. A $38m opening for a $180m tentpole is not a success. There's no way it's getting a sequel.

But yeah, at worst Tarzan is a small but not embarrassing loss, at best it just squeaks out a sequel. Not bad.

Tarzan cost $180 mil... it's gonna have to do gangbusters overseas or have a remarkable hold to make bank. Not all $45 million openings are created the same... films that cost THAT much, pre-marketing, print, theater cut, etc. have to make back roughly their production budget domestically to start to consider turning a profit... roughly $300 mil worldwide, give or take a few ten million, is the target for Tarzan to break even. Through this Monday, it'll be at about $62 million, worldwide. If it were $30-40 mil cheaper, it'd be in good shape. WB might decide that's enough to start sequel talks, but it's really gonna have to read the enthusiasm tea leaves cause it'll be a big gamble.
