It might be overstating to say “all the major characters we’ve grown to live die,” as really the only major character who’s death has an impact is Chirrut Imwe — the only major character who doesn’t seem engineered to well, go on a suicide mission and die.

No. In fact the original plan for that scene was to have an X-Wing intercept and shoot down the Tie Fighter at the last second but they felt it wa a bit redundant given the exact scenario took place earlier in the film with the AT-AT being shot down by the X-Wing a split second before it opened fire on Baze and the other Rebels.
