Without a doubt I would have to use the original incarnation of The Breeders. It was almost a girl-indie-rock supergroup, consisting of Kim Deal (The Pixies), Tanya Donnely (Throwing Muses), Josephine Wiggs (Perfect Disaster), and Carrie Bradley (Ed's Redeeming Qualities). Yes, I did in fact do that off the top of my head. Although the band would later include male members, it has always clearly been Kim's band. They have a beautiful sense of melody and harmony, with a harder edge, like the Pixies, though I feel the Pixies were not quite as adept at performing in this way. I saw them this spring, and they still are an amazing live band. Pod, their first record, and later the grunge classic Last Splash, are among two of my favorite records of all time. And you know what else? A certain Mr. Kurt Cobain agrees with me. He has called Pod one of his all-time favorites. We are in accord.

The other day I saw 4 punkish (yeah old school attired punk like Enid tried to affect in GHOST WORLD college aged girls jay walking across the street and said to a co-worker - "hey, that looks like a Runaways cover band!" my co-worker hadn't heard of them and even had the standard "you mean Joan Jett was in a band before the Blackhearts" questioning. I was reminded how much I liked their girl group take on 70's streamlined pop and went home to listen to listen to "Cherry Bomb". So my favorite is definitely The Runaways.

Runner-up: Mystery from the movie SATISFACTION (title changed to "Girls Of Summer" for its TV airing oddly enough.

boopbloop7@gmail.com
