Jeff Tweedy's lyric changings date to live versions of "Simple Twist" from Rolling Thunder - The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 1975 version is very close to Tweedy's. Also Bob sang it like that in 1981 and throughout the 80's - more recently he went back to the original lyrics. Bob toyed with the lyrics of several Blood songs - notably "Tangled..." which was almost completely rewritten in '84. Also after further "Simple Twist" research I've found that Tweedy's version is an amalgam of many Bob live versions - every line was done by Bob at some point except the "A clown at someplace softly played" - of all the live versions I've perused over the last few hours it's always "saxophone".

Is that enough geeky trainspotting for you?
