One of our 10 Films To See In January, and landing on our lists for Best Movie Music Moments Of 2013, Breakout Directors Of 2013 and 5 Favorite Films Of The New York Film Festival, there is no shortage of superlatives for us to heap onto Sebastián Lelio‘s “Gloria.” Clearly, we can’t recommend this film highly enough, but if there is one reason to track it down, it’s for the performance by Paulina Garcia.
In every scene of the film from beginning to end, Garcia gives a dynamite turn in the story of a woman in the middle age of her life, who embarks on an affair, encounters changes in the lives of her children, and more. Low key stuff? Perhaps on paper, but in the hands of Lelio and Garcia, the result is a movie that delivers a rich portrait of the kind of character and woman we don’t see on the big screen very often. And it’s a film of little surprises too as seen in this exclusive clip featuring a showdown with a paintball gun.
“Gloria” opens on Friday, January 24th, and be sure to read our review from the Berlin Film Festival—where it took home three prizes including the Silver Bear for Best Actress for Paulina Garcia—right here.
