It seems weird, considering they've had a strong working relationship for years, that Fincher would be out of Played With Fire while Andrew Kevin Walker is still on the project. I also doubt that Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig and Robin Wright will be happy about Sony wanting to press on without Fincher. Especially Mara, the extras on the Dragon Tattoo Blu-Ray more than hints that he fought tooth and nail to get her and nurtured her through that performance. I have a feeling they may want to wait, that is if Fincher himself is still interested in it.

Get Mark Romanek for The Girl Who Played With Fire. He has a similar aesthetic, but is different enough that he would bring a lot to the table. Plus he's great with performers and I would love to see him in a chilly Swedish environment. You know the film would at least be beautifully shot and acted. Mark Romanek, people.

Deadline had that scoop about Andrew Kevin Walker doing a rewrite a whole month ago. I can't post a link but go search his name on their website.

Although I would be sad if Fincher didn't direct The Girl Who Played With Fire, I'll be happy as long as I get to see Rooney Mara as Lisbeth once again!

The difference is.. RANGER was a sh*t idea for a huge budget blockbuster. LEAGUES is a good idea. What kid wants to watch sepia toned cowboys, trains and dust for 2 and a half hours? But deep sea adventures, sea creatures, submarines and all that? The failure has nothing to do with the fact that it was an 'original franchise'. Pah. Such nonsense – Avatar anyone? It's just good idea vs bad idea, simple as that.

There's also the issue that "Played with Fire" and "Kicked the Hornet's Nest" are really one movie, with a cliffhanger break. They always talked about shooting them at once back before the first one came out. I think that would still be the only sensible way to do it. The characters can reasonably have aged a few years between 1 and 2, but 3 starts the moment 2 stops, so the actors must look identical.

It's hard to get excited about a 'Dragon' sequel, good as Rooney Mara is, so Fincher is better off out of it. (Can't say I'm thrilled at the idea of him directing Affleck, a worse actor even than Brad Pitt.)
