Please. Pay attention, he is simply talking about their different methods. He even complemented her 'intellectual' approach to acting, meaning she really needs to understand her character in order to play it. Adele's so-called freedom comes from the fact that she has a very open, very different personality to Lea's. I don;t believe he is out to get anyone. They're both to blame for the circus they both created with immature comments about the process. The close ups in this movie are utterly necessary to the story line (in which Adele happens to be the object of everyone's desire, not just Emma's). I think this movie is brilliant, and needs to be watched as a clean slate, without paying attention to all the gossip around it. I recommend you all watch more of his work, his method is very meticulous and detail oriented, and it pays off. Both girls did a phenomenal job. If we should be mad at something, is at the fact that Hollywood failed to recognize these two great actresses for both major awards (Golden Globes/Oscars).

Both actresses have said it took so long to shoot because he would stand around and do nothing – often times they would show up on set and he would say that he didn't feel like shooting that day. Certainly Lea is not to blame for that. He really is out to ruin her, I guess…
