It\’s hard to take off the "nostalgia for my childhood" glasses when it comes to the films of Mr. Zemeckis. Ultimately, he makes films that make me smile nor often than not. The Back to the Future films, Roger Rabbit, Romancing, Gump, Cast Away, Contact…I\’d rather spend an afternoon with any of these over the vast majority of modern cinema. Perhaps not a master of the art form, but a master of crafting entertaining cinema.

I love these ranking lists and even when I disagree with the choices, I find the writing and reasoning compelling. That being said, I think you\’re way overrating Contact and way underrating Forrest Gump. I do agree with your feelings about A Christmas Carol but I actually found that once I got over the dead eyes in The Polar Express (and that terrible Steven Tyler bit) it\’s actually a wonderful and magical Christmas movie – one I watch every year with my daughter.

I won\’t deny I was slightly disappointed not to see Roger Rabbit at #1, but I guess that\’s splitting hairs. I\’m also surprised the utterly maudlin final twenty minutes of Cast Away went unmentioned, though it\’s a good film otherwise.

You lost my agreement when you ranked What Lies Beneath below Beowulf. What Lies Beneath is a fantastic horror thriller!

That said, it takes guts and effort to take a position and compile a ranking, so thanks these are always great reads

Actually I prefer both Back sequals to romancing the stone, which is just trying hard to be like raiders. I prefer sequals to cast away as well.
Roger rabbit and back to the future are brilliant films I can never stop loving

Yes, Romancing the Stone and Contact (Forrest Gump too, by the way) are better than Back to the Future II and, let\’s be honest, Used Cars.

Sorry, Mal, I agree with the Playlist here. I would put Romancing the Stone ahead of BTTF II, but their top three is solid. Of course Back to the Future is #1, it\’s one of the best films of the 80\’s, if not the last 30 years.

Completely agree about Forrest Gump but Contact should top the list. And while Who Framed Roger Rabbit was groundbreaking, it was and remains an obnoxious, over-the-top production suffering from similar brashness for which you criticize A Christmas Carol.
