Though dubbed a “teaser,” there’s no doubt that the just-released first footage from “Her Smell” is just a clip from the film. Sure, it teases. But more than anything, the new clip gives a taste at the manic, inspired performance from lead Elisabeth Moss, in a scene that’s completely out of context, but still impressive.

In “Her Smell,” written and directed by Alex Ross Perry, Moss plays a punk rock legend that has fallen on hard times and takes it upon herself to mentor a young artist and try to gain a little bit of the legitimacy she once had. And in the clip, it definitely shows that Moss is fully embracing the rock star mindset for her role in the film. In the monologue, she shows the wild-eyed flair that is necessary to portray a punk rocker that is obviously not in her right mind. It’s a departure, to say the least, from her more reserved roles in “Mad Men” or “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
As mentioned, the film comes from filmmaker Perry, who is best known for his films “Queen of Earth” and “Listen Up Phillip.” And interestingly enough, given the subject matter of those films and the upcoming “Her Smell,” Perry is a credited screenwriter for the recent Disney family film, “Christopher Robin.”
“Her Smell” is soon to premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival and is definitely one of our most-anticipated. We expect this film to be another interesting, if not great, entry in Perry’s filmography, and clearly, judging by this teaser, a showstopping performance from Moss.
After it’s TIFF world premiere, “Her Smell” will next be seen at the New York Film Festival, with a theatrical distribution to be determined.
