Everybody’s talking about Edgar Wright‘s “Ant-Man” test footage, shot last year for Marvel, unveiled at Comic-Con and then recently leaked online. It was swiftly taken down by Marvel lawyers of course, but those who got to peek at the brief footage were able to witness something that looks beyond promising. But Wright’s got bigger fish to fry than a movie that won’t arrive in theaters until 2015: namely his upcoming feature “The World’s End.” Perhaps attesting to Wright’s speed — it was shot last September — the film appears to be already complete and its U.S. date has been moved up two months, with the stem to stern of the picture arriving in under just 12 months.
Originally scheduled for an October 25th bow, Focus Features has bumped up the date to a late summer, August 23rd date; just a week after its August 14th date in Wright’s native U.K. An apocalyptic sci-fi-ish comedy, the film will conclude Wright’s “Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy,” and follows a group of friends reattempting an “epic” pub crawl. Starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Paddy Considine, Martin Freeman, Eddie Marsan and Rosamund Pike among others, the cast is kind of a who’s who of the U.K’s greatest working players. 20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their home town and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub, The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.
Cinematographer Bill Pope, who shot Wright’s “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and composer Steve Price, who scored the Wright exec-produced gem “Attack The Block” are both lending their creative talents to the film. The film made our Most Anticipated Films of 2013 list earlier in the year.
