Hoffman hit the nail on the head and I TOTALLY agree with him. All the great actors are moving to television while the studios continue to bring out sh!t movies. Re-makes and re-makes of re-makes! There are SO many GREAT stories, fiction, non-fiction, fantasy etc., that they could be making, but they prefer to take the safe bet, the pussy\’s way out.

The \’industry\’ is about one thing and one thing only… SHAREHOLDERS!! So long as they\’re involved, cinema and movies as we once knew them to be, are going further down the drown, until they are no more. And to suggest cinema "will pass as well", Kevin Jagernauth needs to extract his head from his ass!!

I never thought I\’d be some-one who prefers TV shows, however, with the quality writing of some shows and the stars they have landed, has converted me. Obviously I still watch cinema, but the caliber of TV now is so high, it\’s impossible not to applaud it!!

Well, clearly he\’s been seeing the wrong films. I agree with Zil – there have been wonderful films quite recently. To whit, in the last year alone we got Birdman, Whiplash, Mr. Turner, Her, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Llewyn Davis, a spate of boundary-pushing animated films.

Dustin Hoffman is a very, very fine, Academy Award-winning actor who is now saying that the state of film today is terrible. AND WHO WAS IN AN ADAM SANDLER VEHICLE AND "LITTLE FOCKERS." It\’s like Robert DeNiro complaining about the state of things and then appearing in "The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle."

Saying that television is the best it\’s ever been is not saying much. Page-to-page writing, production value, and character acting is wonderful in TV now, but the basic stories are still essentially General Hospital. In this \’Golden Age\’ of TV, doesn\’t it bother anyone that you can only point to maybe five examples of this so-called greatness, and almost all of them — The Wire, Lost, Dexter, Deadwood — whatever example you want — end poorly or abruptly, because the filmmakers didn\’t know what they were trying to say in the first place?

inside llewyn davis is garbage. awful! social network is so dated already. dustin hoffman has been in some of the best films ever made. kramer v kramer, tootsie, graduate, midnight cowboy, rainman, straw dogs, marathon man, all the presidents men… few actors of this generation have a filmography that comes close to those classics

I\’ve been saying the exact same thing on the comments for the worst films of the year list and getting trolled for my efforts. Come now: cinema is in a sorry state. Everybody knows it. Studio movies are either silly dross aimed at immature men or crappy biopics aimed at old women (myself included). Indies are blander than ever. Where\’s Hal ashby when you need him??

Godard announced the THE DEATH OF CINEMA in 1967. Meanwhile I have seen incredible films throughout the past ten years (granted, none of which happened to star Dustin Hoffman). I contest Godard thusly: Kumiko the Treasure Hunter, Night Moves, the Social Network, Only Lovers Left Alive, Dogtooth, A Separation, Amour, Cache, Entertainment, Inside Llewyn Davis, Goodbye to Language 3D. That almost all of these happen to be independent films might be difficult for a superstar lead male actor to comprehend. While I guess it might be a difficult time to make independent films, it\’s far from a terrible time for cinema. People seem to have a difficult time realizing it can be both a good time for cinema and a good time for television simultaneously. Hoffman\’s overgeneralization is simply wrong. It might (and should be!) a terrible time to be a white male lead actor because honestly we have too many of those, and I don\’t care if some old lion\’s heyday is over. Hoffman will never be forgotten anyway.

I dunno, I think you\’re being a tad optimistic, firstly mankind itself seems to be in a deadly decline, especially if you listen to Stanford University, and these days the most fantastic, fraudulent, action packed stories aren\’t coming from films, they\’re rolling news stories. Also what\’s evolving currently has more to do with youtube and an Iphone than either a movie house or a television.

Jeez, what\’s with the jab at Hoffman at the end of the article? The guy said cinema sucks and has for a while. He didn\’t say anything about how it always will. How do you know he doesn\’t realize the industry works in cycles? You didn\’t do the interview. You just read it from some place else just like I did. Of all people, you shouldn\’t put in your two cents after putting words in someone\’s mouth.
