I'm not one to care either way about an unestablished blogger/critic's top ten. Just like I doubt anyone cares (in a personal way) about the results found when 'Best films of 2011 tumblr' is Googled. Not that the list itself is bad (or good) -- but, wow, some of the language used to back up these choices evinces what I can only call a style of cinematic appreciation consonant with the sensibilities of a 16 year old boy (one who's just encountered lots of 'fresh', 'radical' ideas -- on the Criterion forum): "tons of awesomely unbroken shots" (geez, never seen that before); "about love and violence (and how those two intermingle)" (oh brother); "I don't really feel comfortable talking about either just yet ... absolutely tore my heart out" (too complex, hits too close, I agree); "it's also deeply square, politically" (true, Malick should've 'deconstructed' the 50's -- imagine how Refn would handle the same material!). Sorry to come off so cynically, as many comment authors at the Playlist do, but this write-up and the way these picks are rationalized just rubs me the wrong, wrong way

A middle aged guy wakes up on the anniversary of his brother's death, lights a candle for him and thinks about him throughout the day. He thinks back to his time growing up, and about how insignificant his grief was in the space of the universe, just as his personal worries matter not at all to the bustling business continuing to go on around him. He thinks about his mother and father and how they've influenced him, and his regrets and joyful memories about his brother. He makes peace with himself finally through his faith, and the idea that the universe is ongoing, and loving each other makes the struggle worthwhile.

Now that I've just been totally condescending, I'll say that I don't understand why people keep saying "I don't see HOW that all comes together!" about The Tree of Life. I thought it was actually pretty straightforward, but I can certainly understand it not clicking with people.

While I don't get the love for Contagion, which was often so sterile that the threat wasn't felt, this is a nice list. Good to see love for Beginners and Hanna, amid other great films that are getting more attention.

I love Tree of Life, and there's a couple on here that I don't think are all that (Contagion), but I am so glad to see someone else putting Hanna on their list. I've only found like two other critics willing to do that, which I can't figure out. It's my second favorite movie of the year, and it's so exhilarating, stylish, and rife with symbolism and subtext that I can't understand why more people aren't all over it.

A Separation an endurance test? You must be joking. That film is tense and riveting start to finish. It's as close as an arthouse film will ever get to a rollercoaster ride.
