I think it is understandable if WB's aim is $1 billion because Chris Nolan's name and how high the money superhero movies made last year and this year with Iron Man 3.

I think all box-office bomber movies always aim very high. Breaking Dawn Part 2, if I remembered correctly, aimed for $1 billion too since Deathly Hallows can reach that number even though it was impossible if you think logically.

However, Superman is not Batman. In many countries, especially Asia (I'm Asian), many people prefer Batman than Superman. My friend even said that he isn't going to see Man of Steel even though he admit that the trailers and such look good.

Maybe Man of Steel will be around $700 or 800 million

It is way too high,as it was correctly pointed out batman begins with a budget of $150 mil made only $370+ mil but the movie was a major success and the latter sequels were huge,same goes for pirates of the Caribbean,matrix,transformers etc. so as the first in the franchise this must be considered a success if it makes approx between $600 mil – $700 mil with maybe $275 mil stateside and remaining overseas. What matters is the goodwill it generates for other DC movies and the sequels of MOS. If WB is expecting such a high level then it is not fair of them the expectations has to be realistic,if it surpasses it then it must be considered a bonus.

I really want it to be a hit even though I was ultra skeptical for a long time. I think it is unrealistic to think the first film in a possible series will reach 1 Billion quickly. I think besides AVATAR all of the rest of the films in the "Billion Dollar Club" have all been sequels… It should do well as long as critics don't tear it apart days from it opening in wide release . But all wecan do as of now is wait and see.

Of course it doesn't need one billion. That budget is overblown, everyone else seems to be reporting 175 million. If it hits 600 million WW, there will be a sequel.

So in short; from a commercial standpoint WB is allready winning with this. If the trailers do the film any justice – one can only imagine younglings around the world going gaga for merchandise as well.

The reason why I hope this film does great is that Snyder and Nolan will get more power within the studiosystem. Personally not as psyched about this film as the rest of the world (or so it seems).

Man of Steel has already made $170 million from its promotional partners – a number now probably closer to $200 (insane) – and with this being a lighter film than the Dark Knight series – its gonna pull a larger demo (families ets) and it will do way better at foreign markets.

I personally think The Man of Steel has far too much shaky camera work in it, which did it damage. I have no desire to see it again because of that. None of the Dark Knight film use shake Camera work, at least not noticeably. Even in Avatar, James Cameron does not use it much. I think this was Mr Snyders mistake. Mr Snyder should have studied the Dark Knight films and Avatar and Superman the Movie more, which it'sself, does not use shaky camera work. I think 1 billion as a grossing for Man of Steel was realistic, but using NO Shake Camera work. In modern money, adjusting for inflation and their being more people now, Superman The Movie, from 1978, would have made inexcess of 1 billion, probably between 1.3 and 1.5 billion or more. The Man of Steel could have made more then 1 billion had it been better film making and directing. The story was fine. I hope it does reach 1 billion, but I think it's excessive use of shaky camera work, which is very annoying, has let it down.

With the box office of over 600 million WW already and all the money from cross promotion and all the money from licensing fee for all the MOS products that are EVERYWHERE, I can't see how WB is not doing the happy dance. My guess they are fast tracking the sequel as we speak. They will probably film both MOS (2) and the Justice League back to back I could see budget savings by doing that. MOS (2) could lead into The Justice League quite nicely.

So, now we know, Man of Steel didn't come close to Iron Man 3 numbers, let alone the fantasy projections of 300 million plus on opening weekend. And it looks like it's taking a huge hit in revenue from weekend one to weekend two. Buh by, Superman, buh by now.

You know, the batman begins numbers arent as relevant because superhero movies are a well accepted part of the blockbuster summer movie cycle now in a way that it hadnt been at the time of bagman begins release date. 1 billion is a very good measuring stick number to work with. superheros are extremely mainstream in the way action movies of yore were.
