I think I'm the only person in the world who shrugged at the first one, but loved the second one. It's such a messy, feverish slab of spectacle and slapstick. The third one was somewhere in between for me.

First one was a lot of fun. The rest was all downhill from there. I think Rob Marshall's great.

I actually really liked the first Pirates movie. I thought the series was going to be episodic, each one with Jack Sparrow embarking on a new adventures with new characters. Like the Indiana Jones movies. I think it would work better that way.

What I know for certain is that the sequels gargled balls, and it had a lot to do with characters you didn't really give a shit about (read:Bloom/Knightley), and a suffocatingly dense mythology they didn't care to explain in any good way.

Rob Marshall is a better director than Verbinski, and even though the same screenwriters are doing this, unshackling themselves from the first three and doing something fresh might yield a good Summer movie.
