I'm a little surprised by the assumptions around the net (and here) that Fassbender's involvement as a producer somehow raises the chances that this will be a quality adaptation. He isn't really "picky" and will do a project for cash. As a fan, I question his ability to spot a good script.

I believe it can, but the studios need to grow a pair and expect that even if the gamer fans hate the idea that it won't be faithful to their cherished game, they'll see it anyway if only to be able to trash it online. The game needs to be a starting point. The mine from which all great concepts are derived. DOOM would have been brilliant had they stuck with the cross genre of guys with guns trying to fight demons from Hell! Oh and loosing the gun-cam wouldn't hurt either... They had the opportunity to make "Aliens" with demons and pussied out. Aliens vs Predator (at least #2) was a brilliant cross over, taking place during the time of "Aliens" with 3 simultaneous sub-plots that could have easily been exploited in the film media. Instead we were "treated" to a cheesy gorefest that didn't even rate a good gore-porn... The gaming genre is all about interaction whereas film is about experience. In games you affect the world your character lives in, but in film you experience the voyage of the main character as a third person looking in. What makes a gamer jump, doesn't work on a cinema audience and vice versa. So to bind a screenwriter to the 2 Dimensional writing talents of a game designer is a sure fire recipe for failure and one would think that the Hollywood accountants would realize that by now. Alas, no so far...

Great article! I think your most salient point has to do with gamers not wanting a film version to stray from the source material. But, like books to film, we are talking a different medium and "adaptation" is a requirement of success. I am a fan of the Resident Evil series (one of the few games I played through was RE4) not because of its emotional and intellectual depth nor because it is exactly like the game (as you point out, it is not); rather, the films are relatively well made, I know I will be entertained, and my expectations are midling at best. (Similarly, if I want a really good hamburger, I won't go to McDonald's, but if I want fast, minimalist food to fill a hunger void it's a decent alternative.) I will admit, though, I was a huge fan of the first Silent Hill movie. The imaginative an horrifying world it adapted for film, the unending sense of dread, and the terrific production design overwhelmed (for me anyway) the fact I could not really discern a plot of any logic or weight. I was fascinated by the world in which it immersed me -- plot be damned!

Granted, there has never really been one that worked on the big screen, but an argument can certainly be made that some games are as engrossing and ultimately more rewarding than some blockbuster hits. Take the game you mentioned, "Red Dead Redemption", it's storyline is strong and the gameplay and design are both stunning despite carrying heavy inspiration from westerns of old, and in the long run, there's an emotional payoff. I'd take that over watching another Transformers any day of the week. I do understand the argument though, and I agree - but maybe it's better to just leave the good games alone just as gamers pray that the good movies get left alone (because heaven knows games adapted from movies are equally terribly).
