"But ultimately, "Prometheus" is the best example of the crux of the matter here: whether you think that trailers are showing too much, or too little, you're not the person the trailers are being made for"

Ugh, thank you! It's been hilarious to see some of the bitching from the cinephile/fanboy corners about the latest trailer. This movie is a much, much harder sell to a general audience than The Dark Knight Rises or The Avengers. Hard-core sci-fi with a female lead and a relatively low profile cast is tough to market.

I still don't understand some of the hate people have with the TDKR's trailer. It is moody, dark, very character driven , and the trailer music is absolutely wonderful ( the best in years ). Plus, Chris Nolan brought a Hitchcock & Kubrick feel to this trailer ( and a little of " Children of Men " feel ) . I respect and applaud Nolan for keep many things under lock & key.
