While I wouldn't necessarily say The Artist is the finest example of film direction last year Hazanavicius wouldn't be completely undeserving of the award like Hooper was.
I'm still rooting for Marty though. Malick winning would be nice too but Tree of Life isn't his best work and he probably doesn't give a shit what the Academy thinks.
