Just saw this on the first screening of the opening night. After seeing the teaser trailer and finding out who was behind the camera I knew I needed to see it. Such beautiful, impactful, thought provoking cinema. Far removed from the block buster, though they can be enjoyable on their own terms. This presented multiple high level themes that really come together in a wonderfully satisfying conclusion as you point out in your very insightful review.

Speaking of your review, I must say I am very glad I got to enjoy the experience of watching the story unfold before reading your review/essay. You do such a wonderful job of gliding around the themes that you may get a little carried away with exposition for someone going into the movie. But it is great reading as post-viewing musings. Keep up the good work, I'll be back.

Time police, alternate histories focusing on warfare and a bunch of other stuff, as anyone reading it for longer than eight seconds with the comprehension of a ten year old literate child could tell.

Anyway, I'm done. I don't have a horse in this race and you obviously do so I am clearly trying to teach a pig to play piano.

What exact themes? Mostly what I've read from Pournelle is military SF (There Will Be War) and collaborations with Larry Niven. And Piper's friends did do what they could to help him out.

Pournelle (and others) waited until after Beam's death... The suddenly amazingly began writing on his exact themes. That in itself is prima facie evidence to rational people. Also why didn't the great friend and editor help the guy out in practical ways? With friends like Pournelle...

The short story was published in Gardner Dozois' annual science fiction short story collection a few years back. I knew from the moment I started reading about this movie that it was based on that story. I recommend reading the story.

Actually, I recommend reading every one of Dozois' annual collections. They stretch back to the 80s and have hundreds of excellent sci fi stories in them. I've been buying them every summer when they come out and have over thirty years' worth. Currently reading the latest edition. Many of the stories would make excellent movies.
