When I long ago worked for a theater chain, the "onerous" terms typically complained about involved the requirement of a substantial upfront, per screen advance to be recouped against ticket sales and/or a demand for a share of per capita concession sales. In many markets, the theater chain I worked for passed on "Return of the Jedi" because the per screen upfront (if I recall correctly) was $60,000, an extraordinary ask at a time when average ticket prices hovered around $3. In one market, the figure was such that half of the entire population of the community would have had to attend just to recoup the advance. Only then would a theater start to see it's share of box office! And if the film underperformed, the only way to see any of that advance was in the form of a credit against the upfront demand for some subsequent movie from 20th Century Fox. The booking department balked and most of the theaters weathered the storm with an extension of "Flashdance" and "Blue Thunder" while we waited for "War Games" to arrive on the other side of the "Jedi" storm.
