‘Deadpool 3’: Shawn Levy Says There’s A “F*ckload” More Heart, Franchise “Evolves” & Confirms Secret Cameos

Shawn Levy stopped by “Happy Sad Confused” to promote his new film “All The Light You Cannot See,” but he talked about loads of other stuff, too. And yes, Marvel fans, he talked a lot about his upcoming MCU installment, “Deadpool 3.” When prompted about how much heart and emotion the film might have, perhaps a little facetiously, Levy quipped back, “there’s a f*ckload more than you think.” Sounds like the third “Deadpool” film may be the best so far.

“One thing that Ryan and I were united were on was wanting to make “Deadpool 3” very much consistent and continuous with the franchise DNA, but to see where we could evolve in this third movie,” Levi explained. ”And once we knew it was a Wolverine/Deadpool movie, my god, what a gift to any storyteller because not only do you have two icon actors playing their most iconic roles, but you have two characters whose dynamic is already famously fraught. And any time you start from a place with two characters with deep dislike and conflict and difference from each other? Right? The mouth and the surly, laconic, man of few words, what a great formula for storytelling.” Right: an odd-couple pairing for the ages, or at least the best one imaginable for a superhero movie.

But how else does the franchise evolve in “Deadpool 3″? “Ultimately, the movie has a lot more character depth and heart than anyone is expecting,” Levy continued. And what about the rumors swirling around social media about various cameos? Are any of them true, and did anyone of them blow the director’s mind? Surprisingly, Levy didn’t deflect and instead confirmed how easy some of the cameos were to schedule. “Yep, and what blew my mind was how easy some of those cameos have been,” he said. “People love Deadpool. People love Ryan; people seem to like my work, fortunately; they know that Ryan and I are in a groove, of creative brotherhood that is unique and seems to be working.” And that’s true: Levy and Reynolds have done three movies in a row together: “The Adam Project,” “Free Guy,” and now “Deadpool 3.”

But Levy played coy on elaborating on who cameos in his film, instead steering the conversation toward confirmed cast members. “I love the proliferation of casting rumors around my movie,” he admitted. “Because there’s so many, it’s impossible to know what’s real and what’s made-up and so all I’ll say is, this movie—starting with Ryan and Hugh, some of whom the world knows about, Emma Corrin, Matthew MacFadyen —really, just going to work is a delight.” Other confirmed cast members including Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, Stefan Kapičić, and Shioli Kutsuna, returning to reprise their roles from previous “Deadpool” movies. And Jennifer Garner is a confirmed cameo, showing up as Elektra from “Daredevil” and “Elektra.”

But what about that big rumor: you know, the one that Taylor Swift—who is a close personal friend of Ryan Reynolds—will appear as the mutant Dazzler? Levy quipped, “The [rumors] sure escape the lips of social media every day. Sounds like a good idea. [But] I am thrilled to talk about other things.” So much for confirmation there. But Marvel has the cultural leverage to pull off that cameo if they want to. “It’s very much part of the MCU,” he confirmed. “What a privilege, what a wealth of resource and knowledge, but the thrill for Ryan and Hugh and I is we’re making the movie we wanted to make. One hears rumors all the time, good, bad, or anything in between about what studios are like to work at, but this “Deadpool” movie co-starring Wolverine is very much aligned with the DNA of the Deadpool franchise, and there’s been nothing but support in making the movie audacious, gritty, hilarious and gnarly.”

So when will “Deadpool 3” come out? Last week, Marvel Studios pulled the film from its May 3, 2024 release date as production remains on hiatus due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA guild strike. When SAG and the AMPTP agree to terms, and “Deadpool 3” resumes shooting, then Marvel fans will have an answer to that question.
