For HOC season 2, he was involved a lot more. The new DP for that season, stated in an interview, that Fincher gave him lots of notes on dailies. David also discussed with the DP how to maintain the look of the show into season 2. It's more than just barely!

Hey "Edward,"

Fincher was a lot more involved in HOC season 2 than you guys think. He may not have directed any episodes, but he was in complete control of all the marketing. Every single shot in every trailer and TV spot had to go through him first. I can assume he had his say in the editing room for the individual episodes as well.
