whatever points you want to make about why Aronofsky is considering this I'm sure you should accept that maybe the STORY and it's possibilities have something to do with his interest.

doesn't sound unlike David Fincher being attached to Mission Impossible 3 several years ago (and then leaving when his story was dropped). There is the chance this could be a really interesting film with Aronofsky at the helm.

Particularly Marvel, who is prone to interference, and basically ruined Iron Man 2 by forcing them to cram in all the set up for later movies/spin offs.

Aronofsky can probably make this a watchable movie, but I don't see him pulling a "dark knight" out of this.
