I could never forget Barbara Hershey in "Portrait of a Lady"; I still think she deserved to win! Perhaps a more obscure nominee in that category would be Penelope Milford in "Coming Home."

For the record, since Mary McDonnell is listed twice in the article for Passion Fish, she only was nominated in lead actress, not supporting. The Ian Bannen movie is Waking Ned Devine, not Waking Ned. Mickey Rooney's Black Stallion nomination in supporting was his fourth competitive nomination. He had received an earlier supporting nomination and two earlier lead ones as well as a miniature Oscar in 1938 and an honorary Oscar in the 1980s.

Even though in general I like Glenn Close, she was awful in Albert Nobbs but this nomination will tie her with Deborah Kerr and Thelma Ritter as the all-time losers among Oscar-nominated actresses having gone zero for six, though all Kerr's were in lead, all Ritter's were in supporting and Close splits the difference with three in each category.

Though a nominee in 1972, Shelley Winters lost Best Supporting Actress to Eileen Heckart for "Butterflies are Free." She won previously the award for "A Patch of Blue" and "The Diary of Anne Frank."

Probably the most obscure yet major nomination is for jazz musician Dexter Gordon in the best actor category for the film, 'Round Midnight. Gordon never really acted again except for a bit part in the Robin Williams/Robert Deniro film, Awakenings. He doesnt have any dialogue in the film either.

A majority of this years nominations will be forgotten. Yeah, I'm sure we will all remember Glenn Close in her "career defining" performance in the "spectacular" Albert Nobbs? Nope. Or Octavia Spencer shitting in a pie in The Help? NOPE. Max Van Sydow for showing up for Extremely Loud? Not a chance. Rooney Mara for being a less effective version of Noomi Rapace in Dragon Tattoo? Yeah right. Had The Academy nominated more worthy performances, things would have been way different
