Got a Tip?

The Criterion Collection Prepares For Showers With ‘The Umbrellas of Cherbourg,’ ‘Rumble Fish,’ And More

It might not seem like it now, especially for those still caught in the grip of winter, but soon spring will be here, and while there will be plenty of reasons to go outside, The Criterion Collection has a few reasons for you to stay in.

Leading the April slate is Jacques Demy‘s classic “The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg,” arriving just in time to give fans of “La La Land” a chance to catch up with one of its major inspirations. It’ll come boasting a new restoration, a 2008 documentary “Once Upon a Time . . .’The Umbrellas of Cherbourg,’ ” and much more. Not only that, the boutique label will also be issuing Demy’s “The Young Girls Of Rochefort” as well to truly fill your fix of musicals.

For those feeling like a bit of teenage rebellion, Francis Ford Coppola‘s “Rumble Fish” is landing with a new 4K restoration, a boatload of extras, perhaps the most significant being a commentary track by the director, which is sure to be fascinating.

Juzo Itami‘s 1985 charmer “Tampopo” will make you hungry, as it’s fresh off a theatrical re-release with a new 4K restoration, and a strong batch of extras including the director’s debut short film, “Rubber Band Pistol.”

For music fans, Wim Wenders‘ seminal documentary “Buena Vista Social Club” all arrives, and while the extras are nice, it’s the tunes you’ll stay for.

Lastly, classic film fans will want to snap up George Cukor‘s “Woman Of The Year,” and while it’ll be a pretty threadbare release, it stars Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy which is all the persuasion you should need to get this.
