If you think being an English white man–like Best Director winners Tom Hooper (2010) and Danny Boyle (2009)–counts as diversity, you’re paying attention to the wrong details.

Only THREE black filmmakers have been nominated for Best Director in the 88-year history of the Academy Awards; none have ever won. Only FOUR women filmmakers have been nominated in 88 years, and only ONE has actually won the prize (Kathryn Bigelow for ‘The Hurt Locker’). If you think those statistics are perfectly reasonable, then you’re on the wrong side of history.
