I think you guys are right on but man there are a couple bores in there like Kill Bin Laden, Great Gatsby and Les Miserables. Then again this year they did give Extreme and Loud a nom and War Horse so I guess they have precidint. I just really can't see how in 10 months Kill Bin Laden will be nominated over movies like Gravity and Django Unchained or even the new Nicolas Winding Refn film. I mean I get that it is current eventy but thats what people said about the Doug Liman movie with Sean Penn. The other thing about Kill Bin Laden is that it is getting pub because of Bigelow's award pedigree but really she has been a mediocre action director her entire career and then she got lucky with a great script and cast the right actor and now all of a sudden her next movie is an award contender?? I think you guys may be over thinking this a little bit.

The fact that The Great Gatsby is in 3D (insanely enough) might hurt its chances of a nom. It's one thing to have Avatar in 3D which breaks box office records, but a beloved literary adaptation that's not a science fiction story? Shameless.

For this alone I would predict "Gravity" over Gatsby. Great cast, hearing nothing but great things, respected director and so on.

The Master, Lincoln, Les Mis and Dark Knight Rises are the only ones that I'm confident enough to predict right now. Though I think "Life of Pi", "Hyde Park on Hudson" and "Django Unchained" have a better shot at BP than "Argo", "Kill Bin Laden" or "Untitled Terrence Malick" - if the rumours of it being more experimental are true you can forget it.

Extreme Longshot Prediction: Skyfall

I could see this taking the place of The Dark Knight Rises in the Polished Popcorn category. Nominating a James Bond film sounds silly on its face, but I could see it happening as a way of honoring the entire 23-film Eon Bond series, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

If it wasn't a Bond film, it would sound like a lock for Oscar consideration. You have Academy-Award-winning director Sam Mendes tackling a script by three-time nominee John Logan. Roger Deakins (ten noms) is the DP and Thomas Newman (nine noms) is scoring. You don't get much more Oscary than that. The fact that this is a one-off script centering on Dame Judi Dench's character seems to help its chances, and a supporting cast featuring Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, and Albert Finney doesn't hurt either.

As I said, an extreme longshot, but I figure Bond is as likely as Batman.

The real surprise I see coming (only *possibly*) is young Quevenzhane Wallis from "Beasts of the Southern Wild". She seems to be getting raves from just about every critic that has seen the film. Her debut could have as much impact as Gabourey Sidibe's in "Precious". Hopefully, the Academy will give her the same due. Dwight Henry, the actor who plays her father, could also possibly be another surprise nominee, from what I've heard about his performance. "Beasts" could turn out to be the "Winter's Bone" (but even better) of 2012.
I was going to laugh about your attempts to predict things this far out, but then I went back and read your post from last year. Holy crap, were you guys right on the money for a good 60% of stuff, and your suggested longshots were nearly all in contention. So aside from the fact that at least 2-3 major contenders are bound to show up, I feel (rather disappointingly, I must say, just because I like surprises) confident in saying that this list represents 90% of the Oscar contenders we'll see next year. Lincoln and Les Miserables are the only ones I think are absolute shoo-ins, though.

If it can manage to overcome its NC-17 rating stigma (which, in a worst case scenario will just involve cutting a few shots) and if Ld Entertainment can work the marketing mojo, "Killer Joe" could be a contender in a number of acting categories, including Best Actor for McConaughey (don't laugh until you've seen this--seriously), and dueling Supporting Actresses in Gina Gershon and Juno Temple. I personally think Juno is best in show (seriously, this girl acts with every cell in her body), but when awards time comes, Gershon may trump her in "bravery points." Though the writing is amazing, the movie is probably too "out there" for the conservative Academy to give it any major nominations, but the cinematography is also outstanding (Caleb Deschanel), as is the editing (Darrin Navarro). If William Friedkin pulled off a surprise director nom, it might restore my faith in that whole institution.

Very interesting choices. I'm always amazed at how accurate predictions this early in the year can be. What exactly are we even relying on for these predictions that make them so accurate? Marketing techniques? Star power of the films? Patterns with the Academy's previous honors? I'd say most likely a combination of all three of these things.

I think you may be underestimating two films: "Django Unchained" and "Gravity". Both films sound very revolutionary, and they come from two reliable and artistically innovative directors. Not to mention the hype and star power they are both exuding. Also, I foresee a Quavenzhane Wallis' performance in "Beasts of the Southern Wild" to be well-received by critics and audiences alike. The academy loves recognizing the efforts of youth, and Wallis may be the perfect opportunity for them to do so.

Also, I foresee a Quavenzhane Wallis' performance in "Beasts of the Southern Wild" to be well-received by critics and audiences alike. The academy loves recognizing the efforts of youth, and Wallis may be the perfect opportunity for them to do so.

There are so many great movies coming out this year, but I am really thinking the Great Gatsby, Zero Dark Thirty(Bin Laden film), and Les Miserables will be major contenders for best picture. Jessica Chastain has another six films coming out this year(lawless, zero dark thirty, tar, ect) and people have recently started to compare her with the likes of Cate Blanchett, and, incredibly, Meryl streep. The academy certainly seems to think so. I also think Anna Karinina.

You're betting on Nolan and Luhrmann and Affleck over Pixar? Ye of little faith. Brave has to be seriously bad to avoid a nomination. Especially after the insider-y nature of this year's nominees, I expect a push back for populist fare and Brave will be nothing if not respected, populist fare.

My dark horse pick is Avengers. This time next year, the blogosphere will be up in arms about Joss Whedon's lack of a screenplay nod. Remember how much buzz Star Trek got? Take out District 9 and Star Trek would likely have been up there in 2009. Avengers could take that place this year.

At least two of your 9 will disappoint and make room for a Hobbit/Brave/Avengers choice.

(Granted, most of my predictions are predicated on the Academy swinging back toward 2010/2009 nomination wise, as opposed to the nursing home-guided choices of 2011.)

I'd say Django Unchained has a much better chance than your giving it credit for. It's got an all-star cast, it's a period piece, it's deals with social issues, it comes out Dec. 25, its got The Punisher backing it and it's got Tarantino (who the Academy, more often than not, likes). Mark my words, I'm calling Best Supporting Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio. He's been nominated many times and never won, Oscar loves him and no one can write a more interesting and original character than Quentin Tarantino. It's DiCaprio like we've never seen him before and Oscar WILL give him the gold.

Lincoln is in for Director, Picture & Actor at the very least. If The Master does come out in 2012, this could be P.T. Anderson's year to bring home The Big One. Also, The Dark Knight Rises has a good shot a Best Picture but I'd say it's highly unlikely that it would score a Director nomination. The Academy doesn't seem to be very fond of Nolan and it's not like this is the 1st film, it's the 3rd, which I think reduces its chances. They'll nominate it for ratings, and it'll take home the technical awards, but don't expect anything big.

The problem I see with making these kinds of predictions is that while there are some definite strong players early on(See Lincoln). I think it's all but impossible to rule out any film when there's a potential of up to nine films being nominated(see Extremely Loud). That said these are fun columns part of the problem with the oscars is coming almost three months after the end of the year everything kind of feels like old hat. By contrast this hits a lot of films that are barely on the radar even among internet communities.

The one film not mentioned that I would give a shot is Trance. Granted, IMDB lists it as a 2013 release but it's alread been in post-production for almost 4 months and Boyle' films aren't know for their huge productions.
