based on the script, I got into the (possible) Renner character because he was a thug, strong physically – at least violent – but haunted and in need of a home. Formidable and tough from his itinerant life, but intrigued by The Master's promises of self-development. Tough outside, vulnerable inside – could be a great role

Don't get it twisted. Jeremy Renner is awesome and yes, looks much younger than he actually is.

There's no question he's a great actor. Even in SWAT he showed great chops.

What our mild issue is: he's too imposing for the role. That character is not only young, he's weak, mentally, physically, etc.

None of us had a hard-on for Paul Dano in this role, but he did come to mind first simply because of the TWBB scenario where he was dominated by DDL. The relationship in this film is similar and arguably even less balanced because at least Dano's character slaps DDL around and condemns him.

The power balance in 'The Master' is quite different.

Do we think Renner can't pull it off? No, not at all. But he'll just have to kind of transform himself to come off as more of spiritual weakling compared to PSH.

I think losing weight and appearing scrawny might help that balance; Renner is pretty built and ostensibly wouldn't be very frightened or overwhelmed by the L. Ron Hubbard character.

It's all about the psychological leverage and or lack there of that is needed.

I just want to ask the question, why such the PUSH for Dano? Why the instant pass into the PTA company players? He's only done one film with him, albeit a great performance, but hardly a staple.

You should be able sell this movie to anyone with a brain based just upon three names: Hoffman, Anderson, Renner. That's a winning combination.

Yeah I would've never believed Renner was that old unless I'd read it in articles. I think he could totally pass for 30.

I only know the basic details of what this movie is gonna be about and when you guys were saying Paul Dano as the "guy who is in early 20s" I wasn't feeling it. He was the only part of There Will Be Blood that that I didn't love. Jeremy Renner though? Hell yeah I can get on board with that.
