Got a Tip?

Colin Trevorrow Explains What He’ll “Cherish” Most About Working On ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’

With “Solo: A Star Wars Storyfailing to live up to Disney’s expectations, at least financially, all eyes are on 2019’s “Star Wars: Episode IX” as the true test of the franchise’s health. And much like the previous “Star Wars” films released since Disney purchased Lucasfilm, ‘Episode IX’ news has been plagued with behind-the-scenes drama.

After initially being announced with “Jurassic World” filmmaker Colin Trevorrow set to write and direct the final film in the newest trilogy, Lucasfilm has recently changed course, with the director being replaced by ‘The Force Awakens’ helmer J.J. Abrams. Since that announcement, there hasn’t been much discussed about the terms of Trevorrow’s exit, with speculation running rampant about why he was dismissed.

In an interview with Empire Online, Trevorrow opens up about working on ‘Episode IX,’ and it appears as if there are no hard feelings. At least nothing worth mentioning now. Trevorrow explains:

“I don’t want to talk too much about it because I don’t want to affect the way that fans get to see these films. When we were kids, these movies came to us from far away. They were a gift. And the more we talk about how they’re made, the more it reveals that they’re just movies. But they’re not just movies, they’re more than that. Beyond that, I got the opportunity to tell a story that is a celebration of everything I believe in, I got to tell it to George Lucas and I got to tell it to Luke Skywalker, and those are experiences I will cherish for the rest of my life.”

Regardless of your thoughts on Trevorrow’s ability as a filmmaker, you can’t argue with his assessment of the current trend in film news, where everything is dissected. Troubled productions have existed for decades, its just that in the current era, we learn about a lot of the nitty-gritty. And it’s impossible to divorce yourself from that news when you watch the finished film.

The news that Trevorrow says he spoke to Mark Hamill, aka Luke Skywalker, is interesting. We’ve known from other interviews that Hamill and Trevorrow talked about Luke and were “on the same page.” But considering how ‘The Last Jedi’ ended, what exactly does that mean? We’ll probably never know.

Ultimately, you can’t read that quote and not feel slightly bad for Trevorrow. No matter what Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm thought of his version of ‘Episode IX,’ it’s clear that the filmmaker has a love for the franchise.
