It\’s not that the Jack Ryan continuum couldn\’t have been retconned successfully — look at how Patriot Games, which (in the novels) was a prequel, was set as a sequel with Ford and Archer looking as a believably-aged Baldwin and McFadden. It\’s that they totally ignored the continuity set forth in the books. The only "mission" Cathy was the incident in England with the Waleses, and Ryan moved into analysis from teaching history at the Naval Academy… How he went from Wall Street to professor of history, how he overcame his addiction to painkillers while learning to walk again, how he overcame all the obstacles his seemingly comfortable middle-class life threw at him… *that\’s* the story that hasn\’t been told.
Not to mention that it does NOT help the film franchise that the actors they are hiring to play these roles look nothing like the way the characters are described in the novels…

"If some serious screen play writer would bother to read the books, " Newsflash. The earth\’s greatest screenwriter could write this, but a director could always screen it up. Or a studio, etc. there\’s a million reasons why a film can go wrong. And Jack Ryan is like a perfect storm on all fronts.

PINE was not the problem at all they should have looked and went back to Hunt for Red October and borrowed the skin from that premise -deep six Kevin Costner and yes do a deep dive into some Quasi Cold War stuff but write it well and make it real and wipe off the stupid comic book premise and go for it

If some serious screen play writer would bother to read the books, they would see that there is plenty to work with. But a project like that has to be done seriously, not like some Marvel comic book characterization. If it\’s done seriously and even fearfully it could lead to a billion dollar project, just like the old Bourne films.

Agreed. The problem wasn\’t Pine, who could easily do it, and do it well. I just remember the first trailer and thinking immediately the whole movie reeked of mediocrity. Also, considering all the proper villainy the United States has suffered over the last 20 years, it\’s not really possible anymore to cast someone like Ken Branagh, stick him in an Armani suit and expect an audience to fear him. It\’s just… boring.

It got the character beats right, but the plot and villain were too cookie-cutter. Also updating him for a post 9/11 world instead of the cold war loses something intrinsic to the property. Could they do one set in the past?
