For the record, almost all of the cuts to CLOUD ATLAS were made by the local distributor; only a couple of minutes were mandated by the censors. (See also THE GREY, which lost about twenty minutes last year because somebody decided it was just too long.)

Aren't these movies already out in parts of China via bootleg DVDs? Like would it even matter at this point?

How can you consider yourself an artist and tolerate such massive cuts? Even if it's "just entertainment" you send a signal to the Chinese public that censorship is okay as long as you make money. It's a disgrace. Best, K

But are the audiences in China aware that they're not getting the whole picture? And does that bother them at all? If they do know then are they thinking that their government is protecting them from something? And if so, why would they go support a film that their government had to "protect" them from? This is fascinating to me.
