Chevy just thinks his character is a drag, and he'd be happier if he could bring more of his humor to it and not get written into a hole all the time. He's not wrong. The show is funny, but his character has always been a problem. They want to have their cake and eat it too with Pierce by giving him outrageous, racist things to say in one scene, and then have him be the cuddly Grampa in another. Which creates the problem that if the other characters accept him they're tacitly endorsing his behaviour, and if they don't accept it, then why the hell are they hanging around with him?

Their solution in the second season was to turn Pierce into the villain, which didn't feel right, and their solution this season is to tone him down and keep him on the margins. That's not really satisfying either. You can see Chevy trying to throw some stuff in the edges of the frame to keep his character alive on screen, (say what you want about him, Chevy can do physical business like, well, nobody's business) but he often has to fight against what's on the page to get his laughs.

Again, I think the show is good, but it's in danger of becoming the "Aren't Troy And Abed Cute Funtime Hour" unless the writers become aware of what actors like Chevy (and also Joel Mchale, whose role has become more and more marginalized as the show has gone on)can bring to the show if given the chance to do so.

I disagree. Chase's problem is that he's used to being in the limelight. Now that he's part of a great ensemble cast he's upset that he's only getting as much screen time as every other actor on the show.

Poor Chevy.
