I think Beck resembles Bowie in that way as well. He's obviously been compared to him ad nauseum, but Bowie's albums were similarly uneven. Sure some of them are great (Low), but even "classic" ones like The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars are not perfect front to back.

Midnite Vultures, really? That record is chock full of creativity and ideas, but isn't really much of a cohesive album nor does it really contain cohesive songs.

there's lots of little bits and parts in each song on that album that i think are fantastic, but its rare that I can sit through anyone song other than track 1 in earnest.

It's almost has too many things going at once. I do not think of it as a Beck classic at all.

That said, most of his albums are very uneven. Do what i do: Make your own Beck album, take Modern Guilt and then last two records and make a greatest hits of the 3. That's a pretty good record.

Beck is writing entire records for other people now? Modern Guilt was decent, but I think he should focus on his own work a little more. He's definately been slipping ever since Midnite Vultures.

I never thought Neil Hannon and The Divine Comedy would ever get mentioned here. Right on. Vastly underrated. And while I wish them success, I think I would hate it if they became beloved by the world. As they say (they meaning I): We don't like people we don't like to like the stuff we like.
