It was performed in Los Angeles before a live audience, like radio plays of yesteryear, with another sound play that he wrote under his own name. David Thewlis, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Tom Noonan voiced the characters. Maybe they're just taking the audio recording of that performance and adding the animation.
