The thing that strikes me the most about these "modern takes" on classic films is the bleakness of the photography. They're all grey, grey, grey. At least with Technicolor, even if the film wasn't great, there were some nice visuals- Not anymore. Now the movies are bad and the color is bad- This is compensated for by them being, dark, confusing and LOUD. In most theaters, the volume levels is nearly unbearable.

It will tank, just like the horrendous "reboot" of Spartacus did. Why? Because the writer, director, actors, composer, DP and everyone else involved are not as good as the original players. You can't reheat a souffle. It's like an overpaid, amateur orchestra trying to play a Beethoven symphony.

The author obviously knows absolutely nothing about cinema, if he wrote such an unprofessional review. Michael Noer did a wonderful, independent film. His characters look more accurate and psychologically more emotional then characters of the film,1973. The atmosphere of the film significantly exactly close to reality. Papillon-2017 cannot be called a remake. Acting play deserves special praise, Charlie Hunnam, Rami Malek, Ronald Moller and Tommy Flannigan have created a completely new original characters. It's a completely DIFFERENT movie, a great, fascinating and very realistic.

I would respect your review if you told us that you re-watched the original 1973 "Papillon" within the last couple of years. But if you are relying on your decades old memory of the film to draw comparisons to this remake, that's frankly bad film criticism. Often times one's fond memory of watching classic films during the 70's and 80's-- a completely different era for film appreciation-- don't hold up on a more recent viewing. I think if you re-watched the 1973 version and were honest, you would admit that it does not hold up to your original experience. In my opinion, the original has many character and narrative flaws that were somehow more forgivable in 1973.
