This is the first review from Jordan Ruimy that I've disagreed with, but maybe that's because I'm from this so-called slum Nadine Labaki exploits in the film. The fact is, no one understands our neighborhood less than this woman, who is basically an elitist criminal with the money to finance films - always with the intention of garnering awards. This is NOT how children in our neighborhood are typically treated by their families, and Labaki is the absolute last person who reserves the right to tell such a story -- it's like Donald Trump trying to make a movie about southside Chicago. She did do a great job of stealing - stealing the research, stealing the stories, bribing children's parents, bribing officials - to get this done. The child actor's delivery in Arabic, btw? It's very forced, as if someone is reading him line by line. I have no idea why that doesn't translate to people who speak other languages but I guess it doesn't.
