Having scanned a fair number of reviews we seem to have a divide again between those who like and those who don't like James Gray films. Critical comments are more about the roles than the actors and although there are some negative reviews for both Pheonix and Renner, there are also some very positive ones.

It would have been decent of the reviewer to cite the co-writer of the script, Ric Menello,
who died before the film was shown.

Thank you for this great review!I really enjoy reading this.I was worried about Phoenix would be too dramatic in this performance but now it seems he's got it right as always.Gray knows what's best in Phoenix and he always knows how to call forth it.And good for Cotillard!Glad to see so many positive reviews on her performance.

I've yet to see Renner really blow me away in anything yet. Not that he's terrible or anything but still. Phoenix and Cotillard on the other hand, I'd watch them in just about anything. Phoenix especially in his James Gray collabs is amazing. It's a really minor scene but I absolutely love the scene in Two Lovers when he goes to the club with Paltrow and dances the robot into the center of the room. So fucking genius.

Both the British reviews I read have pretty much trashed it, particularly Renner. Odd.

Wow, this is the best written review I've read on this site in a long, long time. Kiang captures the tone, mood and psychological values of the film with feeling and intelligence, rending the rating almost pointless. Toro can do snark and nothing else, Perez gives us plot synopses, Oliver Lyttelton is a technically gifted android and nothing more: you people should take note and lift your game to Kiang's level.

This review is too generous, too much of an accommodation of the film's undercooked drama. The film is at best a B-, and much more of a C.

It's impossible to trust The Playlist's review on a film like this one, with their dick so far crammed inside Gray's asshole.
