"The bad news is that it's more of a "Kung Fu Panda 2" than a "Toy Story 2" in terms of animated sequels". You lost me on that one, have to admit. You're implying that the second Kung Fu Panda was inferior to the first? Personally, I thought it greatly improved upon some of the lesser refined elements of KP1. KP2's a great continuation of the story. As for HTTYD, the first was didn't do anything for me, it was reasonably enjoyable at times, and the musical score was great, but I wouldn't be able to watch it a second time round. I guess I'm not keen on seeing a second.

** Spoiler Alert inside**Really?!? This was a crappy review. I admit I'm bias because I loved the films, but I think that saying that Astrid is sitting on the sidelines is complete crap, did you totally miss the scenes that she's out looking Hiccup and battling the Bewilderbeast? She's as much in the second film as the first. The story is about hiccup's continuing search to find himself. He goes from being an outcast to hero, you think that would be able to switch to easily? I think that both films offer great REALISTIC lessons on finding what it means to be who you really are, taking a stand, the consequences of your actions (good and bad), what true friendships are, the impact of bullying, finding what your inner strengths are, coming to terms with difficult events in life, and many more. So many movies have such easy acceptance of zero to hero without any real emotional coming to terms with it. Any one who as lived on the outside of the cool kids and suddenly becomes popular can attest to the fact that all is not suddenly ok, there is much beneath the surface and these movies show just what an impact your words and actions have on others, not just in the moment but the repercussions into in the future. OK off my soapbox, but I still feel that this review didn't give HTTYD 2 a fair viewing.

"unless, if you wanted to look for something more sinister, in which case the vaguely foreign other-ness of Hounsou's villain and regular references to "looking after your own" seem to point to a message of non-interventionism and anti-immigration."

Right, because it's soooo "sinister" to look after your own kind and to protect them and defend them. Terrible review. I'm surprised it counted as a "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. /:

Hmmm... I saw the movie and I LOVED IT. I thought it appeals to older gen more than the kids, because of the story, especially the moving scenes in the third act. I agree with you on the look of the film.. It's just stunning. Got to give it to Dreamworks for taking the risk of making the characters more mature than the first film. This is not a cheap sequel.
