I saw "Restless" without reading any of the reviews first–a rarity for me–as critics often determine whether or not I will pay money to see a film. I loved it, and was surprised at the number of negative reviews. I'm not sure what people were looking for, and I'm not sure what is inconsequential about two wounded kids in love who aid each other respectively in preparing for death and moving more fully back into the land of the living. I am a voracious filmgoer, extremely picky, and I cried during and after this movie. Roger Ebert gave the movie 3 out of 4 stars, and Roger Moore also gave the film a positive review, and I feel the story impacted them in a way similar to me. It is a sweet, unconventional, love story that at points pokes fun at the sort of Nicholas Sparks hokum polluting many of our theaters. I say it was well-acted, beautifully shot, and moving. Also saw this at TIFF – definitely agree with the review. Trainwreck from the get go. Sad, as I was really hoping for great things.

I disagree in several points of this critic. I saw the film here in Toronto, so bottom line, the best critic is oneself. Go and see it.

Dear Critic. 1) The above sentence makes no sense. \”Is\” what is a bit of a reversal?

2) The song isn\’t by S&G, it\’s the Beatles. Ever heard of them?

3) \”The film boasts a score by Danny Elfman—which isn’t too surprising considering Annabel is pretty much a variation of Lydia from “Beetlejuice”—

Really? Musicians and screenwriters often consult each other on how they\’ll collaborate, even if the screenplay was written years before Elfman\’s involvement. Also, isn\’t the fact that Elfman and Van Sant have worked together before a more important connection?

I hated the movie but if you\’re going try to write smart, it helps to actually BE smart.

This bums me out. If this is closer to \”Finding Forrester\” Van Sant than… \”pretty much everything else he\’s done since \’Finding Forrester\’\” Van Sant, then that bumps it down a bit on my must-see list. But the dude\’s allowed an occasional hiccup because he always makes up for it.
