Funny - I thought the prologue and epilogue were the worst parts of the entire movie - kitschy, music-video-like pseudo-art house drivel. I felt like I was watching a video sequence from Metal Gear Snake Eater the whole time (for what it's worth, I did like the movie overall, although I found the "message" risible and the movie flawed - especially the pretentious but immensely vapid dialogue). Just for clarification, when I say "pseudo-art house," the "pseudo" is the derisive part of the comment. Art house is great when done properly.
Paul - no offense, but the Summa Theologica is a work of theology, not this. That's like saying Donnie Darko is on par with Kant.

As expected, the secular press/blogosphere doesn't get it.

This is a work of theology. Have you not noticed that Von Trier's entire oeuvre is soaked in Catholic blood?

To berate this film without even parsing its theological content is simply unintelligent.

This movie grabbed my guts and tore them out. I felt like Mr. dafoe's balls leaving the theater. It's a stunning masterpiece. Not a masterpiece without flaws, but a work of art that dares to go where no other movie in many years have gone... A masterpiece that I wouldn't recommend anyone to go see.

It's funny. If it wasn't for all the "preposterous" moments that you have chosen to highlight, I would have never given this movie a second thought. As it stands, no movie has ever had this impact on me before. Far from being unnecessary, these scenes are tools to crack your skull open; can openers for the can of worms that this movie turns out to be once you've given it that second thought. You are still going on about this movie in your head. I know.

It bothers me that people have been spoiled about the fox. I, too, laughed at this point in the movie, but out of metaphysical anxiety, not to make fun of the scene; for me a historic cinematic moment. My advice would be for readers to avoid further reviews and just go see the film. In the end, this is all between you and the Antichrist.
