You mention \’The Better Angel\’s evoking Malick through use of wide angle zooming shots. So far as I know, Malick never uses a zooming shot, rather he gets the camera operator to move closer to the subject.

It\’s the film incarnations of the Marvel villains that seem dull as dishwater. Taking them off the page, where they can develop character across more than one comic book, is what kills them in the personality department. Honestly, the closest one that had any heft to it was Iron Man 3\’s Mandarin, pre-plot twist reveal. Some might argue in favor of Loki but he had more character development in Thor 2 than he did The Avengers (where he was essentially an overglorified errand boy whose crowning moment was to be a punchline for a Hulk joke).

Also I\’d argue that Stoick\’s death scene is sentimental enough, given that it is Viking culture being depicted throughout the film. Obvious not historic and to the letter, but how many Vikings have you seen on screen deliver pap-laden weepy-eyed speeches? Stoick making the ultimate sacrifice for his son speaks thunderous enough on its own.

What is it with all this love for Gone Girl? Just watching that scene again reminds me how utterly ludicrous and trashy it is. Easily the worst film of the year.
