Featuring zero characters that actually seemed like real people, it was painful to watch Gylenhaal’s passive father fail to do anything around the “bad guys.” And speaking of those guys, Taylor-Johnson didn’t “have a record?” Sorry but people don’t do the things he does or act like that without getting caught doing other things along the way. Which brings me to my biggest gripe…the book Amy Adams was reading, as presented on screen, was horrible. Guys wife and daughter get kid napped and killed, sheriff tracks them down (over a year that we don’t see apparently) and then this passive father barely even kills them. There was nothing to it! So when Amy Adams’ character seems enthralled by the story and writing, I don’t buy it. Not to mention the whole concept of her ex husband spending 19 years writing a novel to somehow make her have feelings for him again, only to stand her up at a bar as revenge!!!! What!???
