Wow, way off in my opinion. Not only does the writer seem to take some personal issues here like the occasional criticism at possible homophobic elements in a couple of these films, but it’s really obvious that this writer is quite the liberal. Regarding the order, to put Eastwood’s early westerns ahead of such great films like Grand Torino and Million Dollar Baby, just makes no sense at all.

In reply to Chris L.. I'd say if Hereafter is his 'worst' film then he must have made a heck of a lot of good films. And, in fact, he has. Also the reviews for Sully have been very good so not sure which review you are referring to.

In reply to Jacob. You're too biased toward American Sniper. It's a good movie but sort of obvious and nowhere near the depth of Unforgiven. Eastwood is sort of a no nonsense genre director which is something rare in Hollywood these days. He has clean narrative lines and isn't afraid to be politically incorrect. I've liked everything he's done.

In reply to Stephen Morton. It's very hard for the writers here at the Playlist to share an opinion that's not straight from the democratic feminist and gay rights handbook. That doesn't make them bad reviews it's just rarely an objective one. Take it with a grain of salt as I do. There is still some great writing on this site regardless of its heavily weighted and one sided perspective.

Your last-place title (“Hereafter”) was one that I found surprisingly affecting, especially Howard’s scenes. Just shows you there’s one movie for every person where you’re the only one on earth who likes it. Not keen on anything he’s done since, and the Telluride reviews for “Sully” do not inspire much confidence. But there’s no one with a career quite the same as his, the way the ups and downs kind of blend into one ornery project.

While I like all these features and I admire your effort, I think you focus way too much on a film’s failures in order to justify its rank. What I got from this feature is that, minus a few entries, you dislike the majority of Eastwood’s body of work.

Pale Rider was nothing more than a Paler, duller version of George Steven’s classic Shane.

American Sniper is my #1, it’s easily better than Unforgiven and that hammy, unwatchable Mystic River crap.

I saw this at least three times theatrically when I was in high school and revisit it annually. It's one of Laura Dern's best roles and may be Costner's all-time best. An under loved masterpiece.

That’s the right top 2, but the rest of the list is pretty screwy in my view. You think Eastwood has only made 12 good movies? White Hunter Black Heart is a near-masterpiece, as is Bridges of Madison County, and you’ve severely underrated the Iwo Jima movies as well. I also don’t much like High Plains Drifter–it’s far too ugly and hateful, with Eastwood raping a woman to teach her some manners being a lowlight. And you don’t seem to consider the way his themes have shifted over time, critiquing his past roles, reassessing his past movies, and becoming profound meditations on the limitations of heroism and the nature of violence. Seen in that light, American Sniper is a clear successor to films like A Perfect World and Unforgiven, and is in fact a powerful and moving film about the costs of violence and the reasons men still feel it necessary, not a jingoistic tract.

Love seeing A Perfect World so high on this list. Highly underrated in the annals of great american 90s movies.
