A bunch of my buddies saw a little indie film this summer, The Rover, and were blown away by the performance of Robert Pattinson as a slow, shy, criminal with a southern drawl. we all felt he should just get an Oscar right then and there. No one else comes near his portrayal . Did I miss his name ? How in the world could he not be on your list?

I have to agree with Michael I mean despite everyone\’s opinion of Robert Pattinson based on Twilight, he was amazing in The Rover. And the thing that cracks me up is when people say about the movie"it was slow". Like Michod thought he was making an action film , but f*#ked up. I\’m glad the cast and crew are nominated for the AACTA.

I think \’breaking through\’ could be something Pattinson could qualify for based on the comments above. To see him, with his Twilight superstardom in the rearview, working with brilliant directors, challenging himself and turning in great work is something that may shock casual viewers (His role in Cosmopolis changed my opinion of him). He could have very well \’broken out\’ but probably not in the way this particular list hopes to highlight. That being said, I wouldn\’t have been shocked to see him on this list or a bunch of other actors and actresses who are well known but elevated their game to such a degree this year. I thought this year was great btw

I don\’t know if I would go as far as saying big films don\’t rely on stars as much as they used to – we are still seeing the same faces across many billboards. Also let\’s hope that many of these talented upcoming actors don\’t just suddenly get thrust in the limelight, being cast in every single role out there no matter if they aren\’t right for it (Carey Mulligan comes to mind – was all of a sudden in everything and terribly miscast in a couple roles). It makes people bored of them very quickly, and they don\’t get the chance to grow into the artists they could potentially be.

Yeah, Pattinson hasn\’t really "broke through", this year because he has already established himself as a quasi-serious actor with films like Cosmopolis, Water For Elephants and Remember Me. Though his performance in Rover and Maps to the Stars were both solid, the same can be said for Gyllenhaal\’s work in Nightcrawler.

Seriously Chris Pratt in Guardians of the Galaxy? He\’s essentially playing himself as he always has. That\’s not necessarily a bad thing. but it hardly makes him a standout, and barely worth mentioning, let alone in a list of some of the year\’s best performances.

Also, I think you\’re reading way too much into Gyasi\’s performance in Interstellar. His character is barely developed, and as such his performance is only adequate, because frankly, he barely has anything to do. That\’s mostly the script\’s fault.

How are we defining breakthrough? Like, the roles mentioned are good, but it isn\’t going to send half of these actors into super stardom. Like, comparing Chris Pratt and Chadwick Boseman to Jenny Slate and the others makes the term "breakthrough" seem a bit much.

Kristen\’s TRUE breakout performance was for Clouds of Sils maria which is a 2015 film. Still Alice is no good (her part is too small anyhow) and the iraq war movie is bungled by a bad filmmaker.
