''There's a also a very graphic scene in which students are being taught how to perform an abortion.'' Mmm... I guess that scene got deleted for the shorter version that I've seen here in Belgium. Thank God.

Very curious to see how you guys will review Part II. I thought it was the better part.

Please read my review of Nymphomaniac 2 on this site.

As I stated there-- I would've gotten more emotion from looking at a blank wall than I did from Stacy Martin, to be known forever to cult audiences as Joe 1 in Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac Vol 1 and 2 ( In 2 only to continue Joe's telling of her life).
I suppose you must see 1 to understand 2 . I think Martin was cast only for her 18 going on 13 looks by the director, himself an emotionally void person.
The perfect example of Martin's performance is in the Mrs H 'chapter' . If I were Uma Thurman I would have slapped Joe 1 in the face until she showed/said well, anything.
As Joe 1, Martin had no figure, wore no makeup, her hair was drab, and she dressed as a plain as possible . But STILL dozens of happily married, fat, thin, young, old, handsome, homely men were knocking down her door to be with her, an emotionally frigid girl/ woman.
WHY?
Not to mention although I guess it's minor - Charlotte Gainsbourg and Stacy Martin look nothing alike. But, perhaps this is all Lars Von Trier's point.
The REAL why and how of Joe finally comes to life when Joe 2 tells her OWN STORY to a stranger, albeit a seemingly sympathetic one that rescued her. Perhaps in the story this is the WAY SHE SAW HERSELF, thus Martin's purposely lifeless performance. Did Von Trier cast Martin that way deliberately? Frankly, it's the only way I can justify Joe 1. It's story telling, a recounting of all the wrongs after all. (And it also helps that Charlotte Gainsbourg is a supremely good, expressive actress.)
In movie 2 the parallels made between Joe and Seligman have a lyrical 'can't take you eyes away' feel . It becomes the catharthis/ breakthrough in the movie, it's purpose. The realization in Joe 2's mind that all the sex was her way of surviving but not fulfilling or healthy in any way. Fascinating stuff. And a very good movie or at least the Von Trier premise was thanks to Gainsbourg.
(SPOILER)
But, alas, that good old 'Von Trier' ending . I saw, believed in, so wanted a glimmer of hope for Joe.
But this director/artist persists in torturing himself. So did he to his very own personal Nymphomaniac . Sooner or later, his audiences, some of them women will never ever (want to) come back.
(Shia Le beouf ?- get over yourself- your accent sucked and you know it)

I also thought it was a great well-written informative review, although it exasperates me that this is yet another film about female sexual experience written and directed by a man, told to by a man, and the female protagonist even gets a man's name...c'mon feminist or not, where are all the women telling it like it is??

The most thought provoking part, to me, was when she and Jerome finally became a couple. After numerous sex scenes with him, an exhausted Jerome tells Joe he just can't keep up with her. She needs sex at least 10 times a day. With his consent and aid, she prowls for men while he cares for the child. Sex was not something she could control in the least; it was a pure addiction. And then she'd come home, looking like a bad day at the office. They'd look at each other and it was shameful, disgusting, heart wrenching at the same time
