I\’ve a feeling that Decker\’s second feature film formed into exactly what she set out to make. I didn\’t find this film to "underdeveloped" in any way. Decker took what she was developing in BUTTER ON THE LATCH to much more fully orchestrated film experience. To me, this is a deconstruction of Southern Gothic that forms into an unsettling and disturbing cinematic experience. I disagree with labeling anything here as having "arty tendencies" — MILD AND LOVELY is an experimental and artistic plunge into the darkest corners of human cruelty and sexuality. It might be too dark and unconventional for some tastes, but Decker\’s work/voice is far too powerful to merit only a "C+" rating.
