Honestly, of that nominated field in 2008, Slumdog Millionaire was the only film that made any sense. That really shouldn't have been the Best Picture slate at all, considering The Reader and Frost/Nixon were on it, and Button was kind of a fiasco, and Milk was milquetoast. 2008 shouldn't have been a weak field, but Academy voters made terrible choices. If any Academy voters that voted for the Reader should by any chance read this, please, let your children or housemaid fill out your ballot for you. Odds are they'll have better taste.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button felt like the only obvious winner to many viewers also. Looking backwards, I'm sure we'll all come to our senses one day and recognize that Slumdog Millionaire did not deserve all of these awards, even if it felt a right pick at the time because of its political issues. I believe / hope that the Academy Awards are still about films.

How could you not mention The Dark Knight Rises and its ties to the post 9/11 zeigeist in the U.S., the Occupy Wall Street movement, classified C.I.A. torture of terrorists, etc. Rewrite the article, please, and incorporate TDKR. In fact TDKR might be one of the most politically reflecting films about modern American society I've seen in a long time, and I'm European!
