haha, Space Truckers. I was 11 when it came out, saw it on HBO or something cause I had just seen Blade and recognized Stephen Dorf and thought "Dennis Hopper, how bad could it be." Plus the Debbie Mahzer was in her underwear for most of the movie.

I was young enough to enjoy Ice Pirates when it came out on VHS. We loved it. Years later…not so much. It's amazing how much crap you can enjoy as a kid.

If I recall correctly, that's explained in the script, that the effects of relativity and traveling at near light speed, that it's not been thirty years of them even if they left earth 30 years ago.

A great article …I think ive seen all those films and though i don't agree with all your saying(Space Truckers/Ice Pirates are fun film imo) they would be a terrific starting point for lovers of wacky space opera..

Liam Neeson was also in Krull, if you can believe that. One of my favorite movies when I was a kid. Of course, the mystique wore off pretty quick when I watched it again as an adult.

It is incredibly disingenuous to include a reference to Jean Giraud while discussing The Fifth Element and not bring up the massive plagiarism accusations against the film. Despite being hired to do some minor work on the film, the amount that Besson ripped of from Moebius and Jodorowsky's Incal vastly eclipses that. It is the reason why I no longer watch Besson's work and it deserves to be mentioned.

This article was written by people who obviously hate sci-fi movies. A real officiando loves the high-end production and thought put into films like Kubrick's "2001: a Space Odyssey" and "Prmier"… as well as the deliberately campy satire of "The Ice Pirates" and "The Fifth Element" and even the UN-deliberate sci-fi fiascoes such as "Logan's Run" "Dune" and "Sphere." I highly recommend "Scavengers" as a recent crazy sci-fi b-movie to see. Sean Patrick Flannery in all his twitchy weirdly-accent glory makes it a completely amazing watch. It's just bonkers.
