Their relationship goes waaay back as you suggest. I am from Denmark, and you would not believe the how public their feud was sometimes. Refn was once a reoccurring guest on a Danish Radio tv-show, to do a sort of audiorecorded interview to be published as an audiobook of sorts, but broadcastet live on TV all the same – litterally sobbing and weeping about Lars, they way he and his father are treated by Lars, and goes on talking about an inferity complex towards Danish helmer Thomas Vinterberg, who he thought looked much better than himself did, and along with the success of Festen also got all the girls. Refn is one messed up dude. Those 4-5 evening live broadcasts on TV ought to be a Criterion supplement someday.

He was asked about his German heritage and he said he wanted to be a Jew, but he found out that he was a Nazi. He would have been the hit of fesitval if he said he was ashamed of being German. I thnk Lars von Trier, while pretending to be dumb, exposed the sick mind control appartus that is behind the movie industry. Thank you, Lars von Trier. You have done the world a service.

Would have to suspect Refn\’s repulsion was probably expressed in the same spirit as von Trier\’s ardent Nazism. I would to declared \”persona non grata\” somewhere swanky like Cannes. It just sounds cool.
